Founder ATS buyer's guide
A checklist for founders choosing their first applicant tracking system, no HR team required. Use it if you screen resumes between customer calls.

Two roles share one inbox, and you mix up who applied for what.
Your co-founder asks where a candidate stands, and only your inbox knows.
Candidates wait days for a reply because their email sank under customer mail.
Interview notes live in chat threads, and nobody can find them a week later.
If none of these sound familiar, start here: do you even need an ATS yet?
To choose an ATS as a founder, score each tool on setup, pricing model, free tier, screening, candidate replies, teammate access, sign-in and integrations.
Criterion 1 of 8
You have no ops person to run an implementation. If you can't post a real role and see applicants in the first hour, the tool will sit half unused.
Criterion 2 of 8
Hiring pulls people in: your co-founder, a lead engineer, an outside interviewer. On per-seat pricing, each one adds to the bill. On flat pricing, the bill holds. Read what per-seat pricing means before you compare.
Criterion 3 of 8
A free plan only helps if it covers a real search. Some free tiers allow one active job, so the day you open a second role is the day the bill starts.
Criterion 4 of 8
One post can bring hundreds of applicants, and many resumes read like copies of your job description. The tool should sort the pile so you read the strongest first, and tell you why.
Criterion 5 of 8
A candidate's search doesn't pause while you're busy. When every message lives in your personal inbox, replies slip the moment a launch or a customer fire takes over. Keep each thread on the candidate's record.
Criterion 6 of 8
Your co-founder asks "where is this candidate?" and you dig through email to answer. With a shared pipeline, they look it up themselves. Interviewers should leave feedback in a minute, without training or a paid seat.
Criterion 7 of 8
Google or Microsoft sign-in covers most small teams. SAML or SCIM single sign-on can wait until a large customer's security review asks for it. For now, ask how the vendor encrypts data and stores access to your inbox.
Criterion 8 of 8
List the tools you open every day: Gmail or Outlook, a calendar, a chat tool, maybe Claude or another AI client. Judge the ATS on those connections and ignore the integrations you'll never switch on.

Pick a role you're hiring for now and add 20 real resumes. Check how they sort. No draft yet? Use the startup job description template.
Add your co-founder and one outside interviewer. Check the bill after each invite, then ask both to leave feedback without a walkthrough.
Send one real candidate email from the tool and confirm the reply lands on their record. Then sign out and in as your team will.
Funnel dashboards serve a talent team. With one or two roles open, you can read the whole pipeline on one screen. Add them after your first recruiter joins.
Start free, no cardMulti-step sign-off on every job and offer fits a company with department heads. In your first 10 to 50 hires, you are the approver, so the chain is one person.
Provisioning accounts through an identity provider such as Okta helps when IT runs every login. Skip it unless a customer contract or security review requires it.
Sign-in and security
The price on the page often assumes one user and one role. The real bill shows up when you add your co-founder, open a second role, need one add-on or reach renewal. Before you sign, see ATS pricing compared and what per-seat pricing means.
TLS 1.2+ with TLS 1.3
AES-256-GCM for mailbox and calendar tokens
Google or Microsoft sign-in
You still make every yes or no call
Each interviewer you invite becomes a paid seat on next month's bill.
No public price means a sales call before you know it fits your budget.
A cap on active jobs or applicants turns your second role into an upgrade.
Texting, video or extra screening credits billed in addition to the plan.
No resume lost in email: applications sent to your connected Gmail or Microsoft 365 inbox become applicants, scored 0-100. Unmatched emails go to Review needed.
Email, Calendar, Daily briefing and Resume screening agents work in the background while you do the rest of your job. The app works in 200+ languages. Sign-in is Google or Microsoft only, with no SAML or SCIM and no native chat tool integration. More: how Curriculo's AI handles founder hiring, Curriculo integrations, sign-in and security details.

Full details: Curriculo plans and pricing.

Run the checklist above on every tool you look at, Curriculo included. When two or three pass, see 10 ATS tools compared side by side. Stuck between two? Book a call and I'll give you a straight answer, even if it's not us.
Ask five questions before you sign up. Does adding my co-founder or an outside interviewer cost extra? Which free-plan limit will I hit first? Do applicants who email me land in the tool on their own? Which sign-in options do you support? Can I cancel any month and export my candidate data? Get each answer in writing or on the public pricing page.
Flat pricing is usually safer for a small founding team. Hiring pulls in more people than you plan for, and on per-seat pricing each login is a line on the bill. Per-seat can work if you'll be the only person who ever signs in. Before comparing quotes, price the team you'll have by your third hire. Then ask what a flat plan caps in place of seats.
Role count matters less than losing track. One open role with a few dozen applicants fits in a spreadsheet. Two roles at once, or a co-founder who needs to see the pipeline, is usually where it breaks. Start on a free plan at that point, and pay once its limit blocks a real hire.
Usually not at the start. SAML or SCIM single sign-on earns its cost when a large customer's security questionnaire asks how you control access, or when an IT admin manages every login. Until then, Google or Microsoft accounts are enough. Curriculo, for example, offers Google or Microsoft sign-in only, with no SAML or SCIM. If you do need it, ask whether it costs extra.
A first hire needs four things from an ATS. First, one place where every application lands, including the ones sent to your email. Then a way to sort the pile so you read the strongest first; a view your co-founder can open without asking you; and a record of what you told each candidate. The rest can wait until you run more than one role at a time.
Give everyone the same pipeline and one rule: feedback goes on the candidate's record, never in a chat thread. Your co-founder should see every applicant and every note. Outside interviewers only need the candidates they meet. Pick a tool where adding them costs nothing, or their notes will arrive by email and you'll be the one copying them in.
Thirty minutes tells you whether setup works. A week tells you whether you'll keep using it. Run the 30-minute test plan on day one with a real role, then handle every applicant in the tool for the rest of the week. If you're back to sorting resumes in your inbox by Friday, it failed.
Watch for five signs. You can't see a price without a sales call. Setup is quoted in weeks. Every hiring manager is billed per seat. Approval steps are on by default. Interviewers need training before they can leave feedback. A tool built for founder-led hiring lets you post a real role and read applicants on the day you sign up.
Run the 30-minute test plan on Curriculo with a real role. Starter is free and needs no card.
