The Hidden Costs of Enterprise ATS (With Verified Numbers)

The base price is never what you pay. Every legacy applicant tracking system publishes a number designed to get you into a sales conversation. The real cost is two to four times higher, and most of the gap hides in fine print you won’t see until renewal.

This post breaks down where the inflation comes from for each major vendor, using verified numbers from published pricing pages, industry reviews, and standard sales quotes.

What you’ll learn

The actual Year 1 and Year 3 cost of Greenhouse, Lever, Workable, and Ashby for a 50-person startup, with every hidden fee itemized. The cheapest legacy option is still 10x more expensive than CurriculoATS Pro.

Greenhouse: $12,000 that becomes $25,000+

Greenhouse’s Essential tier advertises $12,000 per year. Here’s what gets added before you write your first check:

  • Per-seat fees: $240 per seat per year. A 50-person startup pays an extra $12,000 annually in seat fees alone. A 100-person company pays $24,000.
  • Implementation fees: $3,000 to $5,000 one-time. Greenhouse requires a dedicated implementation manager and a 2 to 4 week onboarding process. This gets billed separately.
  • CRM is not included in Essential. Candidate relationship management for pipeline nurturing requires upgrading to Advanced or Expert tier, which run $12K to $50K+ per year.
  • Sourcing add-on: Around $5,000 per year for 10 seats on Greenhouse Sourcing.
  • Annual renewal increases: 8 to 15% per year. A $25,000 Year 1 bill becomes $27,000 in Year 2, then $29,700 in Year 3. Compounding adds $7,000+ over three years.
$18,400
10 seats Year 1
$33,000
50 seats Year 1
$70,000+
50 seats Year 3

Small startup (10 seats): $12,000 base + $2,400 seats + $4,000 implementation = $18,400 Year 1.

Mid-size (50 seats): $12,000 base + $12,000 seats + $4,000 implementation + $5,000 sourcing add-on = $33,000 Year 1.

Lever: opaque by design

Lever doesn’t publish pricing. Everything is sales-gated. The reason, based on industry quotes and leaked reviews, is that Lever’s real number depends on which “strategic add-ons” a rep can attach to your base quote.

  • Base price ~$6,000+ per year for the ATS alone
  • 40 to 60% add-on inflation over base. Integrations, sourcing, nurture, reporting, and recruiter CRM features are all separately billed.
  • LinkedIn Recruiter dependency: $8,000 to $10,000 per seat per year. Lever’s sourcing is largely incomplete without it.
  • No native mobile app (web-only interface)
  • Custom reporting locked behind Enterprise tier
  • No native onboarding module. Lifecycle ends at offer acceptance, so onboarding requires a separate tool.

Lever is owned by Employ Inc., which also owns JazzHR and Jobvite. This is a private-equity HR tech rollup. Platform stability and data sovereignty are real concerns for long-term customers.

Workable: the headcount trap

Workable advertises $4,800 per year base. The real cost structure is brutal if your team grows.

!
The 21-employee cliff

Cross the 20-employee threshold and your Workable bill jumps 67% in some tiers. This happens at renewal with zero warning. Startups hit this exactly when cash is tightest.

  • Add-on creep: Video interviews +$99/month. SMS reminders +$79/month. Combined add-ons add 59% on top of the base.
  • Starter plan cap: The $149/month Starter is capped at 2 active job postings. A growing startup outgrows this in weeks.
  • Pricing satisfaction: 2.8/10 in industry reviews. One of the lowest among major ATS platforms.
  • 8 to 9% annual renewal increases

A 25-person startup on Workable with video and SMS add-ons pays roughly $7,200 base + $2,136 in add-ons + $2,475 in seat fees = $11,811 Year 1. The bill grows every year.

Ashby: strong analytics, per-seat pricing

Ashby has one real advantage over legacy competitors: analytics. The dashboard is genuinely strong. The tradeoff is cost and target market.

  • $6,000 per year base + $120 per seat. A 50-person team pays $12,000/yr in seats on top of the base, totaling $18,000 all-in.
  • 1 to 2 week setup (faster than Greenhouse, still slower than self-serve)
  • Basic filters, not outcome-based AI. Ashby does keyword matching with some semantic layering on top.
  • Targets Series A+ startups with real funding. Early-stage teams find Ashby expensive for what it delivers.

CurriculoATS: the transparent alternative

Curriculo’s pricing eliminates everything above. Here’s the complete cost structure:

  • Starter: $0/year forever. 1 active job. Unlimited team members. All features including AI scoring with written reasoning. No credit card.
  • Pro: $100/month flat ($1,200/year). Currently $50/month during early bird ($600/year). Unlimited active jobs. Unlimited team members. Priority support.
  • Enterprise: Custom. Everything in Pro plus Full API access, SSO/SAML, custom integrations, dedicated account manager, SLA.

What’s not in the cost:

  • No implementation fees. Setup is 15 minutes, self-serve.
  • No per-seat fees. Ever. On any plan.
  • No add-on inflation. Video, SMS, analytics, Slack, SSO all included on all plans.
  • No renewal increases. The price you start at is the price you stay at.
  • No headcount penalties. Unlimited team members on Starter, Pro, and Enterprise.
  • No contracts. Cancel anytime. Prorated billing.

3-year TCO side by side

PlatformYear 1Year 3 Cumulative
Greenhouse (50-person)$33,000$105,000+
Lever (est.)$15,000+$50,000+
Workable (25-person w/ add-ons)$11,811$38,000+
Ashby (50-person)$18,000$57,000+
CurriculoATS Pro (regular)$1,200$3,600
CurriculoATS Pro (early bird)$600$1,800

The math isn’t close

Compared to the cheapest legacy option (Workable), CurriculoATS Pro is 10x cheaper at regular price and 20x cheaper during early bird. Compared to Greenhouse, it’s 30 to 50x cheaper. And Curriculo includes outcome-based AI with written reasoning, a feature none of the others match at any price.

The free plan gives you everything except unlimited jobs. That’s it. Start there.
